Schirm & Strauch X Studio HILO

The first project is based on the collaboration with Studio HILO that facilitates our main focus on researching on haptics and preservation of traditional textile craft techniques. We use fibers from local sheep and alpacas (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) to do research on different yarn qualities and materialities with the HILO spinning machine.

The yarn is subsequently processed into  knitted and woven samples to show a range of textiles in natural colours, experimental forms and structures. By using film and photography we document our work process, therefore including another medium to our repertoire.

The collaboration can be seen as an approach to transform and question the common tradition of spinning and industrial standards with the aim to empower  small scale design and artistic productions. Besides, we believe that our collaboration contributes to an infrastructure that one day  will manifest in a network exchanging knowledge and sharing resources that will meet the needs of small design studios and artists.
